The excommunication of Baruch Spinoza, the Dutch Jewish philosopher who revolutionized modern thought, is a formative, mysterious event in the understanding of his work. Director David Ofek takes us on an intercontinental journey tracing six reasons for Spinoza’s excommunication. Between Amsterdam, The Hague, New York, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, he makes some surprising discoveries, and traces the figure of a man who continues to intrigue our culture with his ideas, which remain revolutionary, spiritual, and radical to this day. This is the 17th film created for The Hebrews project.

About the Speakers

David Ofek is an Israeli filmmaker and screenwriter known for his impactful documentary and narrative work. His films often explore social and personal stories with realism and emotional depth. Among his acclaimed works are No. 17 and The Tale of Nicolai & the Law of Return, as well as the TV series Bat Yam -New York. His work has been screened internationally and is recognized for its honest, human centered storytelling.

Dr. Adi Avivi(moderator)r. Adi Avivi is a clinical psychologist, group psychotherapist, a teacher, and a writer living in NYC. Adi studied psychology and cinema at Tel Aviv university, before moving to the US to pursue her doctorate. She has been working and teaching in NYC hospitals since 2009 and in her own private practice. Adi’s passion for storytelling has been a part of her clinical and academic work.

Ramy A. Katz(moderator) is an award-winning documentary filmmaker living in Ness Ziona, Israel. His works include "Freeflow" and "Cause of Death," both of which have garnered accolades and participated in numerous international film festivals. In 2020, he founded DOCU-TV, a platform he has since operated and through which he hosts engaging weekly sessions with fellow filmmakers.
